WHY STUDY EDUCATION AT FLINDERS?

Flinders aims to educate teachers who appreciate the complex nature of a teacher's work and practice in ways that promote a socially just, democratic and ecologically sustainable world. All our courses emphasise that a teacher's work involves combinations of the following attributes: high levels of knowledge; values; skills; personal dispositions; sensitivities and capabilities.

The BEd (Secondary) is for students who wish to teach Years 8-12. It can be taken as a four-year double degree program with a BA, BSc, BHlthSc, or a two-year graduate-entry program.

Most classes are delivered on-campus and during the day. Students may also take a Lutheran strand by enrolling in additional topics (Contact the Adelaide Lutheran College for details).

The staff of the School of Education acknowledge their roles in working with students, colleagues and the wider community. We see the following activities in social commentary, teaching and research as integrated, with each activity informing and complementing the others.

Our teaching role is to provide degrees in Education that are inspirational, promote an enthusiasm for learning, equip teachers with professional expertise, and develop life-long learners. We exemplify best educational practice to our students and to the rest of the University.

Our research role is to generate, advance and promulgate knowledge that will inform the scholarly community, our industry partners and society. Our research encompasses a variety of methods, subjects and audiences, providing information, understanding and critique.

In our social role we advocate for cultural beliefs and public policies in which education is a means of achieving social justice. We challenge presumptions and practices which limit individuals' potentials. We endeavour to construct a School culture that encourages, promotes and celebrates:

  • reflection and inquiry
  • academic freedom and integrity
  • collegiality, collaboration and respect for individuals
  • diversity and social justice.

WHAT WILL I STUDY?

The double degree programs will comprise 144 units in total: 69-75 units of studies in education and the practicum; 69-75 units of studies in Science or Arts disciplines. The structure of the programs will allow students to combine the study of education and arts, or science, or health science, which will relate to content knowledge in the school curriculum area in secondary schools.

Bachelor of Education: Includes topics incorporating educational psychology and sociology, and others that focus on teaching Indigenous Australian students and students with diverse curriculum needs. Students will be required to choose two learning areas from the eight learning areas available. They will then specialise in their science, arts or health science major and minor areas so that they can teach those subjects up to Year 12. Students will be required to undertake teaching experience which comprises a series of school placements that build on Education and Curriculum Studies topics. The School of Education works with government and non-government schools, located across the metropolitan area and also in rural and regional areas.

Bachelor of Arts: In the BEd (Secondary)/BA double degree program, students will be provided with the opportunity to explore several different fields of study in-depth. On successful completion of this degree students will be able to teach secondary classes (Years 8-12), in subjects selected from areas which include English, Drama, Mathematics, Science (Biological Sciences, Earth Sciences), Modern Languages (French, Italian, Spanish, Japanese, Chinese, Indonesian, German, Greek), Digital Media Studies (IT), Health Education, Physical Education, Society and Environment (History, Sociology, Religion Studies, Geography, Environmental Studies, Legal Studies, Asian Studies, Australian Studies). Note: that while some Science areas are available in the Bachelor of Arts, students wishing to specialise in Science should apply for the double degree Bachelor of Education (Secondary)/Bachelor of Science.

Bachelor of Science: In the BEd (Secondary)/BSc double degree program, students will be provided with the opportunity to study a broad-based foundation in Science and to specialise in at least two Science disciplines of their choice. Students will complete 69-75 units (ie, equivalent of two years full-time study) from approved Bachelor of Science topics. This includes a major of 45 units and a minor of 18 units to provide depth of knowledge in two science discipline areas and 9 other Science units to provide breadth of study.

Bachelor of Health Sciences: In the BEd(Secondary)BHlthSc double degree program, students will be provided with the opportunity of studying Health topics, Health Education and Promotion or Physical Education to provide background for a first teaching area and electives from either the BA or BSc, to provide the backgrounds for a second teaching area appropriate at the junior secondary level.
