WHY STUDY ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT?
This degree course was created to meet the growing demand for graduates who can help communities and businesses to better manage our environment and its resources.
It deals with some of the most vital issues facing Australia and the rest of the world today - water resources, biodiversity, coastal management, pollution, land degradation, energy use, climate change and sustainable resource use.
The course combines the study of physical geography, the earth sciences and biology (which explain how environmental systems work and how human activities impact on these systems), with the study of the social sciences (which explain the causes of this impact and how our environmental behaviour can be better managed to minimise this impact).
The course also provides a training in environmental monitoring and analysis, and in the economic and social evaluation and appraisal of environmental impacts.
WHAT JOBS WILL I GET?
The aim of the degree program is to train graduates for jobs that involve working with communities and businesses to change environmental behaviour.
Graduates have found employment in organisations such as local, state and national government agencies, state government, catchment management boards, non-government organisations, educational institutions, consulting firms and businesses.
To find out more about the jobs this degree can lead to, go to the Your Career section of our graduate careers website.
WHAT WILL I STUDY?
In First Year students take core topics including Environmental Studies; Water Resources and Society; Cities as Human Environments; and Environment, Economy and Culture; as well as introductory economics. Students also will choose between topics in biology or earth and marine sciences.
Second Year focuses on the knowledge and practical skills students will need for professional environmental work, including such topics as Environmental Systems; Computing Methods in Geography; Demography; and Introduction to Environmental Economics.
Third Year has two parts. Students take three core topics: Geographical Information Systems; Issues in Environmental Management; and Environmental Economics and select three others from virtually any area of the University, depending on their specific interests.
Some elective topics also can be taken in First, Second and Third Years.
The full program of study is set out in the Course rule and topic descriptions for this degree.
