WHY STUDY INTERNATIONAL STUDIES?
This course provides a contemporary and historical understanding of foreign societies, cultures, languages and systems of government and of the complex relationships within the international system. It is very flexible, combining core topics in International Relations with a range of specialist options, including languages. In this course you will analyse:
- the political, social, economic and cultural relationships within the international system
- foreign policy, diplomacy and other modes of interaction between the countries of the world
- Australia's place within the Asia-Pacific region and the world
- the significance of foreign societies, cultures and systems of government
- the international movement of people as immigrants, refugees, workers, students, tourists and investors
- the globalisation of the world economy.
WHAT JOBS WILL I GET?
The Bachelor of International Studies gives graduates an advantage in seeking job opportunities in international, government and non-government organisations, including diplomacy, foreign affairs, defence, intelligence, foreign aid, humanitarian services, politics, education, language services and journalism.
As well as specific skills, students will develop enhanced general skills relevant to many jobs in management, administration, consulting firms, the media, the public service, commerce and industry. These include skills in research, communication, policy and political analysis, and information management.

WHAT WILL I STUDY?
In First Year students will take three core topics:
- Australia and the World
- International Relations: An Introduction
- Australian Politics: A Comparative Study
and select five others from a range of options. This will prepare them to complete two major sequences in Second and Third Years.
The options are American Studies, Asian Studies, Development Studies, Globalisation, History, International Relations, Latin American Studies, Politics or a language. Available languages include Chinese, French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Modern Greek, Japanese and Spanish. Language studies are encouraged but are not mandatory.
Two other core topics are selected in Second Year from a pool of three topics:
- Peace and War
- Political Economy of the Asia-Pacific Region; and
- The Modern International System
One core topic Perspectives in International Studies is required in Third Year.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:
Australian students
Year 12 applicants must have qualified for SACE and obtained Recorded Achievement in at least five two-unit SACE Stage 2 subjects. Included among the five must be four HESS General subjects.
Non-school leavers from various backgrounds, such as tertiary transfers, TAFE, Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT) and other access schemes are eligible to apply. There are no prerequisites.
