WHY STUDY PSYCHOLOGY?

Psychology is the science of the mind: the systematic study of behaviour. Psychologists are interested in how we learn, think and interact with others, what motivates our actions and the role of personality and individual differences in behaviour.

This course was created specifically to prepare graduates to work as professional psychologists in fields including clinical, educational, organisational and academic psychology. It provides high standard training in both academic and professional areas and offers unique training in areas such as counselling and work experience.

Psychology is no longer offered as a major in a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science. However, first level psychology topics can be taken as electives within these and other undergraduate degree programs offered by the university. It is possible to apply for transfer to the Bachelor of Psychology (Honours) from one of these courses.

WHAT JOBS WILL I GET?

Qualified psychologists work in private practice or in a variety of positions in industry, business, education, universities and the health industry. The course is accredited by the Australian Psychological Society. To apply to register to practise in South Australia (as in most States) students must have an Honours degree, and then complete either a Master of Psychology; or the clinical PhD program in psychology from Flinders University; or approved equivalent degree or gain two years of supervised experience.

Flinders students who complete their Honours year satisfactorily are eligible to apply for the clinical masters or PhD programs at Flinders or pursue postgraduate programs at other universities.

To find out more about the jobs this degree can lead to, go to the Your Career section of our graduate careers website.

WHAT WILL I STUDY?

In the first three years, two thirds of your program will be in psychology or related areas, with the remainder selected from other areas of the university.

Psychology topics include interviewing, counselling, psychological assessment, professional practice and a work-experience period spent observing and assisting psychologists.

The compulsory Honours year consists entirely of studies in psychology, including a major thesis. Entry to the Honours year is conditional upon meeting minimum requirements in the first three years.

Psychology core topics include: Psychology 1A; Psychology 1B; Basics of Behavioural Research; Basic Research Design and Data Analysis; Personality and Social Psychology; Cognition and Learning; Human Development; Research Methods; Work Experience in Psychology; Interviewing and Counselling; and Psychology Assessment.

The full program of study is set out in the Course rule and topic descriptions for this degree.
