WHY STUDY ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH?
This course originally was created to educate Environmental Health Officers (EHOs) to work in industry and government, particularly local government, in areas such as environmental health, environmental protection and occupational health and safety. However, many other career paths have become available to our graduates, including research and development, training and education, and health services.
EHOs monitor and maintain health standards in relation to air, food and water quality, soil pollution, waste management, noise pollution, pest control, housing and the use of hazardous substances. Their expertise covers physical and biological sciences, an understanding of communities, and relevant aspects of the law and administration.
The course incorporates all these components while also placing a strong emphasis on communication and educational skills, the principles of human behaviour, and the ability to resolve problems. An important prerequisite is a personal conviction of the need to protect human health by maintaining a safe and healthy environment.
WHAT JOBS WILL I GET?
The course is accredited by the Australian Institute of Environmental Health and the South Australian Department of Health and is recognised by other relevant Federal and State authorities. Graduates have technical and theoretical expertise and the practical ability to anticipate future problems, critically evaluate reports and complex data, and deal with environmental health issues which may involve conflict between interested groups. One of our greatest strengths is that our graduates have the best employment track record in the University.
Opportunities for employment are increasing as the public becomes more aware of health and environmental issues and more demanding about health standards.

WHAT WILL I STUDY?
In First Year students will study biology, chemistry, physics and introductory topics directly relevant to environmental health, as well as learning communication skills and information management.
In subsequent years, further studies in environmental health are combined with related areas such as law, microbiology, engineering and management.
Specific topics include: Health Aspects of Water Quality; The Built Environment; Toxicology for Environmental Health; Social and Environmental Psychology; Food, Nutrition and Health; and Human Physiology.
In Second Year, you'll spend time in field placements with local government, state agencies, local businesses and other environmental health professionals to gain on-the-job experience. A final-year major research project also is required, usually initiated and supported by these external agencies.
The course is offered by the School of Medicine, with input from staff from a number of other parts of the university.
The full program of study is set out in the Course rule and topic descriptions for this degree.
