WHY STUDY COMMERCE?

This course provides a foundation for career paths in accounting or finance and students may graduate with a named commerce degree in one of these areas of specialisation.

The course provides core studies in a range of topics related to business and enables students to satisfy the admission requirements of accounting (Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia and CPA Australia) and finance (Financial Services Institute of Australasia) professional bodies.

Applicants seeking entry to either of the specialisations use the SATAC code 214081.

A fourth (Honours) year is offered to suitably qualified students and involves a research report or thesis and coursework in accounting or finance.

FLINDERS BUSINESS SCHOOL

The Bachelor of Commerce is offered through the Flinders Business School, which brings together expertise from several key areas of business studies at Flinders University, including accounting, commerce, economics, finance, international business and marketing. The School has a strong research culture and actively engages with the business community, locally, nationally and internationally. A key objective of the School is to provide a stimulating and supportive environment for both undergraduate and postgraduate students.

WHAT JOBS WILL I GET?

Our graduates fill positions as diverse as accountant, analyst, auditor, management consultant, graduate administrative assistant, corporate finance graduate, finance officer, account manager, investment consultant, tax accountant, trainee branch manager, specialist manager, administrator and supervising manager.

Their potential employers include International accounting firms Deloitte, KPMG, Ernst & Young, PricewaterhouseCoopers; other successful financial firms such as BDO, Edwards Marshall & Co, Goldman Sachs JBWere, Insurance Australia Group (IAG), Lifeplan Funds Management; Australia's major banks; Government departments such as: the Australian Taxation Office, Department of Treasury and Finance, SA Auditor-General's Department; mining giants Santos, BHP Billiton Limited, Rio Tinto Limited; companies as diverse as ABB Grain, Holden Ltd, Telstra, EDS and a range of others.

WHAT WILL I STUDY?

In First Year you'll take compulsory core subjects in Introductory Microeconomics, Accounting for Managers, Quantitative Methods and Introduction to Business Law.

In Second and Third Years you will complete a specialisation in either accounting or finance.

If you are interested in obtaining professional body accreditation with either CPA Australia or the ICAA you will be required to take Corporations Law and Financial Management as electives.

You will also complete 33 units in Elective topics available from a range of areas across the University.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:
Australian students

Year 12 applicants must have qualified for SACE and obtained Recorded Achievement in at least five two-unit SACE Stage 2 subjects. Included among the five must be four HESS General subjects. Non-school leavers from various backgrounds, such as tertiary transfers, TAFE, Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT) and other access schemes are eligible to apply. There are no prerequisites.

TAFE
Credit transfer arrangements for up to 54 units (equivalent to 18 months of study) are in place for applicants who have successfully completed certain TAFE courses.
