WHY STUDY CREATIVE ARTS?
This is a unique course for students who want to fill key creative roles in the theatre, film, television or digital media industries, as writers, researchers, editors, actors, directors or producers. There are three streams -
each with its own SATAC code. Potential students may apply for each stream separately.
The course builds on Flinders University's established strengths in Drama, English and Screen Studies, offering practical and creative programs with extensive vocational training.
By choosing to study creative arts in a university context students combine specialist practical training in their chosen area with the high quality education provided by the Bachelor of Arts program. Student's practical skills will be complemented by generic skills such as independent thinking, critical evaluation and research abilities that will widen their employment prospects in the arts and communications industries.

WHAT WILL I STUDY?
Students will follow one of the following streams, each with its own specific program of study.
CREATIVE WRITING: An ideal preparation for students seeking to work as editors, researchers, freelance writers, publishers and authors in both new and traditional fields. Initially providing an introduction to literary studies, fiction, and English in the workplace, the course allows students to practise a range of written genres, including poetry, writing for children, creative nonfiction and scriptwriting. Designing work for particular audiences, formats and editing is emphasised and options such as publishing and editing are offered.
DRAMA: Flinders is respected for providing 'the intelligent alternative' in professional drama training, combining a solid grounding in performance theory with a high level of technical skill. This stream builds on the successful Drama Centre theatre program, which is noted for its strengths in inter-cultural performance and contemporary text-based experimental theatre. New programs in acting for the camera and video production have been developed with the assistance of film/television actors from Australia, England, Poland and Iran.
DIGITAL MEDIA: If you are interested in working creatively with digital media and exploring the connections between information technology and the creative arts, then our new Digital Media stream is for you.
This program combines topics in information technology, multimedia design and culture, working in creative teams with established general skills associated with a Bachelor of Arts degree. It will appeal to students who are interested in applying their creativity to the many opportunities available in the digital media industries.
SCREEN: This stream provides the conceptual and practical groundwork needed to devise short, screen-based productions from conception to final presentation. It equips students with the intellectual and basic technical skills required to understand screen-based media and devise viable production projects, and introduces them to the various roles involved in screen production. They then specialise in specific skills, including producing, directing, writing, editing or production management.
The full program of study is set out in the Course rule and topic descriptions for this degree.
