WHY STUDY SPECIAL EDUCATION?

Increasingly, students with special needs are enrolling in regular preschools and mainstream school classes, necessitating much closer collaboration between teachers trained in special education and those teaching mainstream classes.

Regular classroom teachers now need knowledge and skills traditionally seen as belonging to special educators and special educators have to work more closely with regular class teachers to adapt and modify programs to make them more inclusive of all children.

WHAT JOBS WILL I GET?

The Bachelor of Special Education provides appropriate additional specialist training for teachers at all levels of the school system. It allows teachers to prepare for work in special schools and special classes, to prepare for work as resource or support teachers in regular schools, or simply to extend their range of skills as regular classroom teachers able to cater for a wide ability range of students, including those with gifts and talents.

To find out more about the jobs this degree can lead to, go to the Your Career section of our graduate careers website.

WHAT WILL I STUDY?

The course comprises two core topics and a range of optional electives. Some topics require students to work in practical settings for up to three hours a week. If part-time students are teaching, the practical work may be undertaken at their own school. Full-time students are required to gain practical experience in particular settings as part of the course requirements.

Additional practical experience can be gained through field placements taken under directed study topic codes.

The full program of study is set out in the Course rule and topic descriptions for this degree.
