WHY STUDY ARCHAEOLOGY?
Studies in archaeology provide a means of learning about the distant past as well as the material culture of very recent times. Contemporary archaeology contributes to debates about heritage and what we value about the past, about planning and development, and about identity.
Archaeology complements other subject areas such as Anthropology, Australian Studies, Biological Sciences, Classics, Chemistry, Environmental Science, Geography, History, Health Sciences, Indigenous Studies, Law, Legal Studies, Medicine, Museum Studies, Physics, Sociology, Visual Arts, and Women's Studies.
Archaeology students at Flinders gain both practical experience and a theoretical background in subjects that focus on Australian archaeology from 50,000 years ago to the present day.
CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
Qualifications in archaeology may lead to employment in museums, in the public service at the local, state or federal level, or in freelance consulting work. A fourth-year Honours degree or graduate diploma is the minimum requirement for such careers, while a higher degree is necessary for an academic career.
COURSE OVERVIEW
The major sequence within the BA consists of 9 units in First Year and 12 units each in Second and Third Years. The First Year topics are compulsory, however in Second and Third Years students choose from a range of options which vary from year to year.
PRACTICAL WORK
Fieldwork is an essential component of the teaching program at all levels of study. Students receive instruction in laboratory and field methods utilised by archaeologists in the collection and analysis of data, including basic surveying, artefact identification, site recording, computer applications and excavation. Periodic field trips provide students with first-hand experience in the study of archaeological materials. Voluntary participation in external projects is encouraged.
INTERNATIONAL EXCHANGE PROGRAMS
Flinders has negotiated international exchange programs with a number of universities and there is an opportunity for students in their second or third year to undertake a period of study in other countries. More information may be obtained from the International Students Office on (08) 8201 2750 or the Director of Studies, Archaeology.
