WHY STUDY ASIAN STUDIES?
Asia today is in the midst of major changes, the outcomes of which have enormous implications for Australia.
In the past, Australia's national orientation tended to be towards Britain, and then the United States. More recently, we have turned our attention increasingly towards our neighbours in the Asian region to seek our future prosperity: social, cultural, political and of course economic.
The changes currently underway in Asia are likely to affect our future relations with the region in ways we cannot yet foresee with any certainty. What is clear, though, is that to ignore Asia, or to retreat from it, is simply not an option. Our geopolitical position, our economic orientation and the depth of our social, political and strategic ties to Asia are such that commitment to the region must remain strong and vibrant.
To be able to manage our future relations with Asia in ways which bring benefit to us all, the next generation of Australians will have to have much greater familiarity with the Asian region than had their parents.
They will need to develop what one government committee referred to as 'Asia literacy': a familiarity and sense of comfort and confidence in dealing with Asian societies, languages, political systems, economies and cultures. Asian Studies at Flinders provides a means of achieving this.
CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
A major in Asian Studies offers students a variety of exciting career opportunities. Graduates have found work in both the private and public sectors, in Australia and in many countries in Asia, in international business, teaching, translating and interpreting, international journalism, diplomacy, international development organisations, tourism, the hospitality industry and government.
COURSE OVERVIEW
The Asian Studies major is an interdisciplinary social science program which sets out to provide a broad introduction to the Asian world, with an emphasis on social, cultural, economic and political change in modern Asia. It is made up of core and elective topics taught both by the Flinders Asia Centre, School of Political and International Studies, and other departments and schools in the Faculty of Social Sciences, including History, Geography and Environmental Studies, Sociology, Development Studies and Women's Studies.
OVERSEAS STUDY
A period of study in Asia is an excellent complement to studying Asia in Australia. It provides a degree of familiarity with the region not otherwise possible, and enables students to develop personal relationships with people from the region which will last a lifetime. Moreover, it enhances career prospects substantially.
The Flinders Asia Centre, School of Political and International Studies, has relationships with a range of Asian universities, in countries such as China, Indonesia, Japan and Singapore, which offer students the chance to spend one or two semesters studying overseas. On successful completion of their studies, students receive full credit towards their Flinders degrees.
