Major sequences and specialisations
Computer Studies
Computer Studies can be taken as a major sequence within a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Commerce. Select the appropriate degree for links to the relevant program of study.
A more rigorous Computer Science major sequence also is available.
WHY STUDY COMPUTER STUDIES?
The Computer Studies major was designed specifically to provide formal training in areas of computing and information technology which complement a student's other study program. It requires a lower commitment to computing topics than Computer Science specialisation within the Bachelor of Science but has sufficient content to equip graduates for professional employment.
The major in itself cannot lead to Honours studies in Computer Science, but it is possible for interested students to complete additional units to meet Honours requirements.
CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
One of the exciting features of the computing profession is the variety and diversity of the career opportunities. There is a whole range of new career options that even computing professionals did not anticipate five years ago. If you like solving problems, communicating with people, learning new things and being creative - whether individually or as part of a team - then being a computing professional is likely to appeal.
COURSE OVERVIEW
The course provides a thorough grounding in the fundamentals, key concepts and terminology of computer studies and information technology. Students become familiar with the use of PCs, software applications, a networked, multi-user Unix computer systems environment, and key Internet tools. The focus of the practical work is on electronic information literacy.
Topics in Second and Third Years deal with programming, software engineering, systems, architecture and applications.
