Major sequences and specialisations
Environmental Studies
Environmental Studies can be taken as a major sequence within a Bachelor of Arts. The program of study should be read in conjunction with the full course requirements for the BA.
Flinders also offers a number of specialised environmental degrees - see Areas of study.
WHY STUDY ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES?
As the pressure of use on all parts of the environment increases, so our need to understand the environment and how we can interact with it in sustainable ways becomes more and more important.
Environmental Studies encourages a wide-ranging, interdisciplinary and integrative approach to the study of the biophysical environment.
Students will be made familiar with a wide array of interactions between people and environments as well as various environmental processes and biophysical systems.
Environmental Studies therefore involves such topics as the forms and processes of the biosphere, the economic, political, philosophical and ethical dimensions of our relationships with the biosphere, and the planning strategies and management techniques that can be implemented to regulate our impact on environments.
CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
People, businesses and governments are becoming much more environmentally concerned and aware. Many jobs calling for environmental expertise are regularly advertised in the national press.
Local, state and federal governments are the main employers, but CSIRO, the Murray-Darling Basin Commission, and multinationals including mining companies also offer a variety of environmental research or management positions.
COURSE OVERVIEW
The First Year of an Environmental Studies major comprises of two topics:
- ENVS1701: Environmental Studies: this topic is an introduction to Environmental Studies. An investigation into environmental processes is followed by an examination of the economic, social, political and management principles which influence the interactions between people and their environments. These themes are studied within an Australian context, but the principles are widely applicable.
- ENVS1702: Environment, Economy and Culture: this topic emphasises the way in which cultural and economic influences cause different societies to engage with their environments in different ways. The scale of approach here will be global. With quite different perspectives these topics provide a balanced foundation for further studies.
No previous study of the environment is assumed although students who have undertaken such senior secondary topics as Environmental Studies, Geography, Agriculture or Biology will find themselves well prepared for the First Year topics.
First Year Environmental Studies may be combined appropriately with many other subjects in Social Sciences and in other faculties of the University.
First Year Environmental Studies and First Year Geography together form a most comprehensive foundation for the advanced study of environment and society at tertiary level.
In their Second and Third Years, as well as further detailed examination of environmental processes and emerging environmental issues, students may select from a range of topics which include: Australian environmental change; environmental ethics, politics and the emergence of various environmental movements; environmental weeds; management and planning relating to both urban and rural environmental themes; and topics providing specific skills such as Environmental Impact Assessment and Geographic Information Systems.
Of the 24 units which constitute the minimum amount of study for the major in second and third years, 12 units are core prescribed topics and 12 units are elective topics.
