Course overview

Flinders offers fully integrated five-year qualifications for high-achieving students that enable you to graduate with a Master of Teaching on top of a bachelor degree. Education topics are studied in all five years of the double degree together with Bachelor of Arts topics in the first three years. In the final years you will study topics from the Master of Teaching. In addition to your Bachelor/Master of Teaching you can also complete a Master of Education with a minimum of an additional semester of study.

The Bachelor of Arts/Master of Teaching (Early Childhood) is a five-year double degree designed to prepare early childhood educators (birth to age 8). You will study a range of Bachelor of Arts topics, curriculum studies and theories of education. Professional practice placement will ensure you gain the background and skills necessary to enter the early childhood education profession with confidence and competence.

Combine with the Bachelor of Letters

The Bachelor of Letters is available to all students studying a degree at Flinders and is available in languages, English, creative writing, innovation and enterprise, and sports performance coaching. It enables you to follow your interests and aspirations and enhance your career prospects by undertaking a second area of study in addition to your primary degree. You will graduate with two qualifications, expanding your employment opportunities.

Entry requirements

Prerequisities: None.

Domestic students: You can qualify for undergraduate courses through: year 12 qualifications, adult entry (STAT/Bridging Program), TAFE/VET qualification, higher education transfers. Flinders also offers a range of special access schemes. Refer to undergraduate study applications.

Master of Teaching component

At the end of third year students will need to meet a minimum graduate point average requirement to progress on to the Master of Teaching topics in years four and five.

Students must obtain a Child-Related Employment Screening through the Department of Communities and Social Inclusion (DCSI) before they can apply for school experience and teaching practicum placements.

In addition, the Australian Government has recently introduced the Literacy and Numeracy Test for all initial teacher education (ITE) students to ensure that they have the high level of personal literacy and numeracy skills required of teachers. The test is a single, national instrument designed to assess elements of an individual’s literacy and numeracy skills and will be used to demonstrate that ITE graduates are in the top 30 per cent of the population for literacy and numeracy. All South Australian students commencing an ITE program after 1 January 2017 will be required to meet the benchmark prior to graduation. Further information, including registration details.
