What is Social Work?
Social workers help people to help themselves. They work with individuals or in a broader community context and are involved in activities ranging from counselling and group work to community development and social planning. Through all of this, the fundamental aim of social work is to improve the quality of people's lives.
Why study Social Work at Flinders?
- Our School of Social Work is respected Australia-wide for its teaching program and its commitment to foster imagination and lateral thinking in the exercising of judgments which can be applied flexibly and credibly while working towards social justice.
- Our teaching staff are all researchers and their interests and expertise include poverty and inequality, community work, urban space and collective action, citizenship and local democracy, loss and grief, dementia and care giving, bereavement, child and family welfare practice, aged care, addiction, alternative care, technology for older people, social support and cancer care.
- We have strong community links, including the establishment of a Loss and Grief Centre in Adelaide in partnership with Anglicare SA. The Centre offers such services as the Star Bear program for children who are grieving the loss of a parent, sibling or carer and the Living through Suicide Program.
