Archaeology is offered as part of:

Flinders also offers a Bachelor of Archaeology

Why study Archeaology?

Archaeology is the humanistic and scientific study of ancient, historic and modern cultures. Archaeology focuses on the relationship between culture and material items and provides a means of learning about both the distant past and the material culture of recent times.

Contemporary archaeology contributes to debates about heritage and what we value about the past, about planning and development, and about identity.

Subjects addressed include human evolution, past environments, archaeological science, biological anthropology, past diet and health, Indigenous archaeology, forensic archaeology, historical archaeology, maritime archaeology, modern material culture, gender studies, heritage management, and the archaeology of art. At Flinders, there is a strong focus on the archaeology of Australia, although other world areas are addressed.

What will I study?

Refer to the course rule.

Practical work

Fieldwork is an essential component of the teaching program at all levels of study. Students receive instruction in laboratory and field methods utilised by archaeologists in the collection and analysis of data, including basic surveying, artefact identification, site recording, computer applications and excavation. Periodic field trips provide students with first-hand experience in the study of archaeological materials. Voluntary participation in external projects is encouraged.

International exchange programs

Flinders has negotiated international exchange programs with a number of universities and there is an opportunity for students in their second or third year to undertake a period of study in other countries. More information may be obtained from the International Students Office on (08) 8201 2750 or the Director of Studies, Archaeology.

Career opportunities

Qualifications in archaeology may lead to employment in museums, in the public service at the local, state or federal level, or in freelance consulting work. A fourth-year Honours degree or graduate diploma is the minimum requirement for such careers, while a higher degree is necessary for an academic career.
