Why study Asian Studies?

Geographically and economically Asia and Australia are closely linked. There has been a great deal of change in Asian countries recently and these rapid changes will have considerable impact on Australia and Australians.

Flinders has one of the strongest Asian studies programs in Australia, concentrating on the social, political, economic and cultural changes taking place. There is a particular focus on Southeast Asia, which complements strengths in Indonesian language and studies.

First Year topics examine traditional cultures, development trends, historical origins and Asia’s place in the modern world. In subsequent years study options range from politics, economics, business and the role of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to culture and religion, and environmental change.

Overseas study

A period of study in Asia is an excellent complement to studying Asia in Australia. It provides a degree of familiarity with the region not otherwise possible, and enables students to develop personal relationships with people from the region which will last a lifetime. Moreover, it enhances career prospects substantially.

The Flinders Asia Centre, School of International Studies, has relationships with a range of Asian universities, in countries such as China, Indonesia, Japan and Singapore, which offer students the chance to spend one or two semesters studying overseas. On successful completion of their studies, students receive full credit towards their Flinders degrees.

Career opportunities

A major in Asian Studies offers students a variety of exciting career opportunities. Graduates have found work in both the private and public sectors, in Australia and in many countries in Asia, in international business, teaching, translating and interpreting, international journalism, diplomacy, international development organisations, tourism, the hospitality industry and government.
