Why study Australian Studies?

Australian studies is a socio-cultural analysis of a changing nation and its people. This program of study brings together a wide range of topics from the humanities, education and social sciences to give students a broad perspective of Australian culture and society and the opportunity to investigate aspects of both in considerable detail.

Core topics are offered in First Year, and students then choose from a range of Second and Third Year topics offered in history, sociology, screen studies, women’s studies, cultural studies, cultural tourism, archaeology, legal studies, geography, literature, politics, philosophy, modern Greek, Italian, education and a number of other disciplines.

Australian studies also works closely with Indigenous studies.

What will I study?

Refer to the course rule.

Career opportunities

There are postgraduate Australian Studies courses available in Australia and overseas. There is increased pressure on business to show cultural awareness and initiative in its local and international dealings for example in tourism. The print and electronic media require informed and articulate analysts and advocates. Government and the public service are in need of employees who understand a multicultural society. Australian Studies is an essential part of primary and secondary education and high-calibre teachers are needed in the area.
