Why study Earth Sciences?

Many of the opportunities and challenges facing human civilisation today are intimately related to the Earth and to our understanding of this dynamic and ever changing planet. You will discover how the Earth is changing and the consequences for our environment and life on Earth. A major in Earth Science covers the exciting and multidisciplinary areas of water, ocean, atmospheric, geological and geophysical sciences.

Study overview

The Earth Sciences major at Flinders is unusual within Australia in that it offers students the opportunity to select studies across a range of areas including hydrology, geophysics and the ocean and climate sciences.

For those who wish to take a comprehensive undergraduate program in a particular area of the earth sciences, majors in Environmental Hydrology and Water Resources and in the Ocean and Climate Sciences are also available.

The Ocean and Climate Sciences program, which specialises in physical oceanography, is not available anywhere else in Australia at either undergraduate or honours levels.

Flinders maintains external links with the CSIRO Division of Water Research and Division of Soils, SA Water, and the South Australian Department of Mines and Energy in a centre of concentration involving teaching and research in hydrogeology. A major national research facility - Airborne Research Australia - has been created in association with Flinders' longstanding specialisation in meteorology.
