Why study English?
Students may choose from one or more of the three broad areas covered by English at Flinders:
- Literatures in English
- Creative Writing
- English for the Professions
The study of literature can assist students to think critically and creatively:
- It trains students in the ability to shape their opinions with a real sense of human consequences.
- It offers an understanding of the nature and power of literature, and the way that texts may shape attitudes to race, to gender, and to social and economic relationships.
- It enhances the ability to present views clearly and persuasively, and to analyse the arguments of others.
Few literatures are as rich and diverse as literature in the English language, and we explore this in many topics offered by the Flinders University English department, with particular emphasis placed on contemporary Australian literature, including South Australian literature.
What will I study?
Refer to the course rule.
Honours
A full-year honours course is offered both in the study of English literature and in creative writing. Students undertake a thesis or piece of creative writing for one third of the program, and a range of electives is also offered.
