Why study International Relations?
International Relations is a program of study sponsored by the School of International Studies with the assistance of other academic units at Flinders.
The field of International Relations encompasses the causes and consequences of a world divided among different countries. Its elements include diplomacy, foreign policy analysis, strategic studies and military affairs, peace-keeping and war-making, ethical issues such as human rights and refugee asylum, aspects of international political economy and trade, and trans-national issues such as nuclear weapons, terrorism and environmental cooperation.
International Relations seeks to understand the role of 'middle powers' (like Australia) in a world that also includes a 'super power' (the United States) and 'small powers' (many poorer states). Students taking International Relations explore Australia's role in the world community and in the Asia-Pacific region. They can also study international organisations and regimes like the United Nations, NATO, ASEAN, the ANZUS alliance and the Kyoto Accord.

Career opportunities
The study of International Relations develops specific skills and knowledge which provide an advantage for employment opportunities in foreign affairs, diplomacy, intelligence, international research and consultancy, military and defence administration, international journalism, international human rights organisations, international development organisations, business and trade, and international hospitality.
The study of International Relations also enhances 'generalist' job-related skills - such as skills in research, information processing, analysis evaluation, organisation, oral and written communication, and a broad general knowledge - which equip graduates for an increasingly dynamic job market in such broad areas as administration, management, business and the public service.
