Italian is offered as part of:
It can be taken alongside any other degree in a separate Diploma of Language.
Italy has one of the richest cultural heritages in western civilisation and has been a world leader in literature, architecture, painting, sculpture and music for the past 800 years. The first university was founded in Bologna in 1290, and it later opened the first School of Law, which attracted scholars from all over Europe. Banking and accountancy were invented in Italy in the late Middle Ages.
Today Italy is one of the seven wealthiest nations in the world and an essential tourist destination. Italy is a major trading partner with Australia (and increasingly with South Australia) and the Italian language is a pathway to employment.
Italian is the second most widely spoken language in Australia, with more than half a million Italian Australians using it every day. You can practise and use Italian in your own community; in fact, you can virtually 'live' Italian in South Australia!
The first Italian came to South Australia in 1839, and since then citizens of Italian origin have made major contributions to the development of the State.
All students enrol in the topic Italian 1 in First Year (Part 1 in first semester and Part 2 in second semester) but for most of their classes are divided into groups according to their linguistic competence. The aim of this streaming is to encourage students to acquire a good grounding and develop accuracy in the most basic elements of the skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing.
Besides lectures, teaching is conducted through tutorial-type interaction and with the aid of audio-visual and computer programs designed for Italian.
Students combine a language study with their degrees in all sorts of areas; for example alongside the sciences, computer science and information technology, international studies, international business, education, law, commerce, or nursing.
Language students also can travel and study while earning academic credit towards their Flinders degrees.
Italy has a long cultural and scientific heritage embracing theatre, art, music, literature, design and technology. A knowledge of Italian can be of benefit in fields such as tourism, hospitality, music, fashion, design, architecture, science, education, technology, government services, international law, commerce and sport.
