The Flinders University is committed to making this campus a safe environment for all of the people on campus.
Security tips are widely circulated and there are a number of points available on campus which are connected to the University Security system.
A life could depend on this emergency procedure.
In the event of an emergency first call the Ambulance/Police/Fire Brigade.
Phone 000 - remember to add an extra 0 if you are calling from an internal university phone. Give clear concise instructions to the operator, then notify University Security on ext. 12880 and give them the same information.
Security will meet the emergency service and guide them to the correct location on the grounds.
In addition, most of the University has an Emergency Warning System which has two alarm sounds.
Student emergency procedures
When "Alert" signal sounds "BEEP - BEEP"
- Cease Inter-floor movement.
- Await further instructions.
When "Evacuation" signal sounds "WHOOP - WHOOP"
- Proceed via safest route to Assembly Area. Do not use the lifts.
- Assist mobility impaired persons as necessary.
- Do not re-enter the building until instructed to do so by Authorities.
If fire discovered
- Alert persons nearby and request assistance.
- Ring the Fire Service on 000 and Security on 12880 or operate the nearest Fire Alarm.
- Advise a Warden.
- Act as directed by a Warden.
To use an extinguisher remember P.A.S.S.
- Read instructions.
- Pull the pin.
- Aim at the base of the fire.
- Squeeze the trigger.
- Sweep from side to side.
Useful tips
- Notice where the exit signs and fire extinguishers are in the areas you most frequently use.
- Read the emergency procedures signs to ascertain what to do and where to go in an emergency in that building.
- Familiarise yourself with the type of fire extinguishers available and their correct usage.
- Please note that during an emergency all people on campus are required to follow the directions of all Fire Wardens (red hard hats) and Chief Wardens (white hard hats).
