During the first year of the course, undergraduate directors work as assistant directors on productions directed by senior students. In the remaining three years undergraduate directors have the chance to direct up to nine productions. Post-graduate directors direct up to six productions base don the length of their course. These productions are supervised by staff (if directors themselves) or professional directors.

Directors are encouraged to explore a range of audience performer relationships – proscenium arch, in-the-round, intimate space, large theatre, television studio, on location; a range of genres in theatre and film – naturalism/realism, classical theatre, post-modern theatre, comedy, documentary, video clip; and a range of performance creation styles – video production, devised performance, text-based theatre.

Post-graduate directors can specialize to a greater degree than undergraduate directors.
