Vision and Mission
- Vibrant, productive rural communities are integral to the long-term sustainability of Australia.
- It is critical that people who live and work in rural and remote Australia have access to high quality, relevant and affordable education, training and care at all ages and stages of life.
- It is essential that people who live and work in urban contexts and provide policy advice to government and others, and who design and manage a myriad of programs intended to benefit country people and communities, deeply understand rural.
Research and teaching to progress the vision for the Chair is framed by:
- The National Framework for Rural and Remote Education (NFRRE) derived from the Human Rights Inquiry into Rural and Remote Education in 1999 - 2000
- National and international data on literacy and numeracy achievements; school completion rates; transition to post-school pathways; rural, regional and remote demography; indicators of community well-being such as mental health and suicide; and, economic productivity indicators
- The challenges and issues of sustainability - including the exodus of young people from many rural areas - and its potential for developing new economic bases for rural and remote communities
- The impact of drought and climate change
- National perspectives and nation building
