Twighlight Seminars

The Southern Schools Research Group hosted the first in what we anticipate will be an ongoing series of collaborative 'twilight' research meetings, each highlighting a specific research method/methodology. On Monday July 5th, (from 4:30 - 6pm in the International Room 5.34), the Southern Schools Group presented six, ten-minute presentations focusing on "interviews" as a key research technique. The six researchers provided a wonderfully diverse window onto the world of interviewing. Their approaches ranging from quantitative survey research through to post-structuralism. The night was very well attended, the ensuing discussion was lively and everyone enjoyed a beverage and light snack. Look out for our next twilight seminar which we hope to run in September 2010.

Educational Futures supports Research Higher Degree Students

On Tuesday 30 June, the School of Education in association with the Centre for the Analysis of Educational Futures held a one-day conference for postgraduate coursework and research higher degree students. The conference was designed to provide students of the School of Education the opportunity to put their research in the public forum for discussion and exchange ideas with colleagues and staff.

The conference began with an Indonesian dance and vocal presentation, organised by some of the School's international students. Students and staff were later joined in the morning break by Professor Michael Barber, Vice-Chancellor of Flinders University, who acknowledge the importance of the event. Professor Andrew Beer, Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) and Professor Faith Trent, Executive Dean Faculty Education, Humanities, Law and Theology also attended part of the day.

Feedback from staff and students indicate that the conference was a great success. It provided an opportunity for students at all stages of their RHD candidature to gain experience in presenting their work to a broader audience. The contributions of staff, who committed their time and expertise to running each session and providing detailed feedback, was highly valued.

A Play - A Satire - A Social Experiment: Educating Fronnie at the Fringe

So, should the primary purpose of education be preparing a workforce, furthering social justice, imparting moral values, or promoting individual fulfilment? Thanks to Paul Jewell’s Adelaide Fringe play Educating Fronnie, the choice is up to you.

Paul received extremely good attendances at both performances of Educating Fronnie. “I'm still counting the votes, but the child centrered 'Chris Childs' is the winner. The whole exercise has been very successful, with interesting data to be analysed and published , hopefully later this year.”
