Why study Applied Linguistics?

Applied Linguistics is concerned with the practical issues of language: acquisition of second or foreign languages, language teaching, language policy, multilingualism, cross-cultural communication, maintenance of languages, and assessment and treatment of language difficulties. The major in Applied Linguistics provides critical, practical and theoretical knowledge relevant to careers in foreign language education, the teaching of English as a Foreign Language or Second Language, and in social communication and the pathology of speech.

Why would you want to study Applied Linguistics?

Interest in language and its study pervades everyday life, and gives us insights into the human mind, whether we are trying to decipher the meaning of an advertisement on a bus shelter, get on with our partners at home and colleagues at work, or understand the benefit of speaking another language. By increasing our understanding of how language works and studying the relationship of language and communication in a wide range of personal, social and professional contexts, we enrich our lives as we become more able to express ourselves effectively in both the written and spoken modes.

What kind of jobs can students move on to after they graduate?

Careers in education, publishing and public service will be accessible to students completing this field of study. Students with a double major in Applied Linguistics and Law or International relations, plus a Diploma in Language, find employment in the Department of Immigration, Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, in various Government agencies, both in Australia and overseas. In fact, a knowledge of linguistic methods and scholarship can be applied in all spheres of employment and linguists’ skills are particularly helpful in teaching, enhancing literacy at primary level, but also at secondary level although this is not a required area of the curriculum at that level.
Whether one is negotiating business deals with overseas partners, teaching ESL or a second language, the linguists’ skills are invaluable. In brief, linguists or applied linguists have exciting opportunities to work in contexts that are personally meaningful to them.
