Spanish is one of the three most widely spoken languages in the world. It originated in Spain and it is now spoken by 400 million people in more than 20 different countries in four continents. Spanish is the official language in Argentina, Bolivia , Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica , Cuba , Dominican Republic , Ecuador, El Salvador , Guatemala , Honduras , Mexico , Nicaragua , Panama , Paraguay , Peru , Puerto Rico , Spain, Uruguay and Venezuela. It is also widely spoken in Brazil, Israel, Morocco, the Philippines and the United States of America, where 40 million people are native speakers. Not surprisingly, it is one of the six official languages of the United Nations and is also an important trading language in the Asia Pacific region.
Hola! The School of Humanities is running an introductory Spanish language course designed for people with no previous knowledge of Spanish. This course is suitable for complete beginners and will provide participants with an introduction to basic conversational Spanish. In addition to in-class activities there will be at least one outside activity aimed at enhancing your understanding of Spanish-speaking cultures. If you are interested in learning one of the world’s most widely spoken languages in a fun and informal atmosphere then this is the course for you. The course, taught on-campus by native Spanish speakers who have years of teaching experience, will run between 1 May and 19 June 2013 and will consist of 8 X 90 minute sessions (1 session per week for 8 weeks).
