Indigenous Archaeology in Australia Field School (ARCH3305/ARCH8306)

In 2010 the ARCH8306 field school will be run as part of a the Ngadjuri Heritage Project (NHP), a co-ordinated approach by the Ngadjuri Nation to the research, planning and management of key areas and regions in Ngadjuri land.  This project will undertake systematic field surveys of Plumbago Station, in the mid-north of South Australia.  It has the following specific aims:

•    Identify and record Aboriginal sites on Plumbago Station.
•    Integrate this data with data collected over the last two years of the project (funded by the National Heritage Program) to develop a database of site locations for the region.
•    Augment the above data with ethnographic and historic data on site use and significance through the conduct of archival research and oral histories.
•    Use a GIS program to pull these different forms of information together to develop cultural maps for the region.

The cumulative outcomes of this research are:
•    The development of a significant database of Ngadjuri heritage sites.
•    An overall strategic cultural heritage management framework for Ngadjuri lands.

The Ngadjuri Heritage Project is managed by the elected Ngadjuri Heritage Committee, on behalf of the Ngadjuri Nation, as part of a dedicated cultural heritage program. The Ngadjuri Nation wishes to develop its cultural heritage research and management strategies on Ngadjuri lands.
