Postgraduate Programs through the Department of Archaeology

The Department of Archaeology at Flinders University offers both a general Research Higher Degree (MA, PhD) program, and specialised graduate coursework programs in Archaeology, Maritime Archaeology and Cultural Heritage Management.

A Research Higher Degree is typically 2-3 years in length and involves the completion of an in-depth thesis on a particular aspect of archaeology.  An MA requires the completion of a 40,000-60,000 word thesis and involves two years full-time study or an equivalent period of part-time study.  A PhD requires a thesis of 80,000-100,000 words and normally requires three to four years full-time study or equivalent.

Graduate coursework programs, on the other hand, are modular and allow you to specialise in a different way. They range in length between 1 semester full-time to 4 semesters part-time.  The coursework programs are intended to meet the vocational needs of graduates who wish to extend their skills, learn new skills, or specialise in various aspects of archaeology. Graduate courses are designed to be sequential, allowing students to progress from one course to another at their own pace and in a manner that suits their own situation.

To complement students’ in-class learning, our graduate coursework programs are integrated with the wider DIRT (Directed Industry-Ready Training) Program for students and members of the general public.  The Flinders DIRT Program combines extra-curricular Master Classes, credited Industry placements, and a variety of Work Integrated Learning opportunities to ensure that our graduates are ready to practice immediately upon graduating.
