Call for Entries
The AAA Executive and 2009 Conference Organising Committee invites AAA members to submit their best archaeology-related photographs to the 2009 AAA Photo Competition. Entries must be received by no later than 4 pm Wednesday 25 November 2009 and will be displayed throughout the AAA Annual Conference at Flinders University from 11 to 14 December 2009. Entries will be judged by a panel at the conference, with winners announced at the AAA Conference Dinner on the evening of Monday 14 December 2009 (no discussion over the winning entries will be entered into!).
Entrants don’t have to be a registered conference delegate to enter but must be a current financial member of AAA. Any winners not present at the conference will be notified by email. Entries will be available for collection at the conclusion of the conference or alternatively please include a suitable stamped addressed envelope if you want your print(s) returned by mail. Entries not collected within one week of the conclusion of the conference will be recycled.
PRIZES
There will be $200 prize money for the best entry and $100 for the runner-up in each of the official AAA Photo Competition Categories (A, B, C and D). Suitable entries from these categories may also be chosen to be used on a future cover of Australian Archaeology, the official publication of the Australian Archaeological Association Inc, in accordance with the Entrant Agreement Form.
The winning entries in “Just for Fun” (Category E) will receive prizes of South Australian wine.

- Category A. Archaeological site images
- Category B. Archaeological fieldwork or laboratory work in progress (with people)
- Category C. Archaeological artefact images
- Category D. Manipulated or artistic images
For display at the AAA Conference only:
- Category E. “Just for Fun” – the lighter side of archaeology

GENERAL CONDITIONS OF ENTRY
- The competition is open to all financial AAA members.
- All possible care of entries will be exercised, but no responsibility will be assumed by the AAA for the loss or damage of entries in exhibit or in transit.
- Entrants must complete one Entry Form for all their entries, accompanied by an Entrant Agreement Form for each entry (except for entries in Category E for which no Entrant Agreement Form is required).
- A maximum of two (2) entries per category per entrant is allowed.
- The entries may be terrestrial or underwater archaeological subject matter pertinent to any of the specific Categories A, B and C. Entries in Category D must have a clear archaeological origin. Photo content must adhere to the AAA Code of Ethics. The Conference Organising Committee reserves the right to accept or reject entries.
PRINT REQUIREMENTS
- Prints must be made as large as possible to fit onto an A4 sheet. Prints must be made on heavyweight (eg 220 to 250 gsm) photographic quality paper in matte, gloss or semigloss finish. Prints may be produced by a photographic service bureau. No slides will be accepted.
- Prints should be trimmed to the boundaries of the image and must not be framed, mounted or matted in any way.
- Each entry must be given a short title for display and citation purposes. The title, the category, and a descriptive caption giving brief details of the subject (eg, description of scene or artefact, location, date taken, names of any recognisable people in the picture) must be clearly printed on the back of each print. Please indicate “UP”. If you print these details on a separate piece of paper, please ensure the paper is then securely fastened to the relevant print.
- Prize winners must be able to supply a digital file of the entry for any subsequent use of your photograph in accordance with the Entrant Agreement Form. The file should be in JPEG, TIFF or flattened PSD format at the same size and resolution as the file used to make the print. The larger dimension of the image must be at least 2540 pixels.
- The entrant/s name and email address or phone number must also appear on the back of each print.
