The first two years of this award are undertaken at Flinders University and the third and fourth years are undertaken at the University of South Australia, Mawson Lakes Campus. The award is conferred by the University of South Australia.
The Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical) prepares students for a career as a Mechanical Engineer.
The 1st year of this award contains studies in fundamental science and engineering topics including electronics, computer programming, mathematics, chemistry and physics.
The 2nd year focusses on mechanics and structures, fluid and energy, the mechanics of machines, engineering design and automation.
The 3rd and 4th years are undertaken at the University of South Australia's Mawson Lakes campus and includes advanced studies in areas such as energy conservation, manufacturing and computer-aided design.
Complete program of study to be published in October 2008.
Mechanical engineering is concerned with the design, development and manufacture of machines and mechanical engineering systems. These include engines and turbines of various kinds, land transport vehicles, ships, aircraft, robots, pumps and fans, air-conditioning and refrigeration systems, building services, industrial plants, and manufacturing processes.
All our Engineering awards have been designed in close collaboration with industry in order to meet future development needs. Students gain specialist knowledge in key areas and an integrated tool kit of skills that will enable them to meet the technical criteria required by industry and to engage professionally with on-going technical developments.
The first year of this award is similar to the first year of our other Engineering awards allowing students to transfer between awards with minimal loss of time. For students without the necessary prerequisites, the Bachelor of Engineering Science award provides a pathway into this award.
This is a new course. It is expected that it will meet the requirements for accreditation by Engineers Australia and be recognised internationally.
What can I do with my Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical) degree?
Flinders also offers all students the opportunity to major in a language in conjunction with any undergraduate course. The Diploma in Language is designed to provide students with competence in a chosen language that adds greater portability to their qualifications. You will complete a total of one extra year of study and graduate with both your chosen degree and the Diploma in Language. You can apply for this at time of enrolment.
