Concert: Italian 'Romanze da Salotto'

Rediscovering the Pleasure of Enjoying Music Together
Verdi, Puccini, Rossini, Donizetti and many others

This concert will present famous romanze da salotto - musical compositions for a solo, duet or more voices; these were usually accompanied by piano. The texts were written by modern poets and dealt with the themes of love, desire and seduction. This style of music was performed in middle-class houses in the nineteenth century. Composers such as Verdi, Rossini, Bellini, Puccini, wrote “vocal chamber music” and even some well known arias from the opera repertoire such as Puccini’s “O mio babbino caro”, became popular as romanze da salotto.
