Public Lecture: The Oceanography of our Southern Shelves
Associate Professor John Middleton SARDI Aquatic Sciences/Flinders University
Our southern shelves are exposed to oceanic currents that are driven by local and remote winds and strong seasonal changes in heating and evaporation. In this talk, the dynamic physical drivers of these systems are outlined and illustrated using super-computer simulations of the physical environment. An outline is given of the Southern Australian Integrated Marine Observing System that has been deployed to understand the climate and climate change of these systems.
This is a special lecture to accompany the Journey to the Abyss exhibition showing at the South Australian Museum until 12 March 2012.
