Foundation Course

The Flinders University Foundation Course allows people to experience university study in a a supportive learning environment. It teaches in clear and concrete terms how to be a successful student and introduces you to some of our major fields of study.

The course is held in the early evenings and is also available online.

There are no prerequisites for entry and on successful completion students are able to apply for admission to Flinders degree courses the following year.

Length of Course

The Foundation Course takes 6 months of part-time study to complete, which includes a minimum of 4 topics taken from Parts 1, 2 and 3. 

2008 Course dates and times

The course commences on 18 March 2008 and ends on 25 September 2008. All classes on campus are taught at night, commencing at 7:00pm.

Entry requirements

There are no prerequisites or entry requirements.

Fees

Fees are $125 per topic.

Pathways

Over 2800 students have used the Foundation Course to move on to bachelor degrees at Flinders.

To apply for a degree course at Flinders University in 2009 you will need to have completed Parts 1, 2 and 3. You will also need to have attended 75 % of the topics in which you enrolled. 

Who is eligible to apply?

This course is open to everyone who has not previously studied at university. There are no prerequisites or entry requirements.

Adults of all ages have previously enrolled in the Foundation Course.  Some have had a short break from study since leaving school, others have not studied formally for 40 or 50 years and others did not complete Year 12.

People from diverse cultural backgrounds have been seizing this opportunity to increase their educational attainment.

The Foundation Course will provide a stimulating and challenging opportunity for you to test yourself out and, possibly, to find a new direction in life.

Study Options

There are 3 different study options:

  • Option A (On campus in the evening) . This gives participants the opportunity to experience university study, to become familiar with lectures and tutorials, the university library, and the value of interacting with other students and lecturers.
  • Option B (Online study). For students who find it difficult to attend classes on campus. Those who take up this option will study the first 2 parts of the course online and then attend Part 3 of the course on campus.
  • Option C (Off-campus day classes). Part 1 is taught at the Adult and Community Education Centre at Christies Beach High School on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. Students then transfer to Flinders University for Parts 2 and 3.

Application for enrolment

For those who applied by the January 25 deadline an offer of a place has be sent to successful applicants.  The offer includes includes an acceptance of offer form. Those wishing to enrol must return the form no later than Friday 8 th February.

For those who submitted a late application an offer of a place will be sent once your application is assessed.

If you accept the offer, you will be enrolled in Part 1 and Part 2 of the course and a Tax Invoice/Statement of Account will be forwarded to you. When you have completed Parts 1 and 2, you will be given an opportunity to choose topics from Part 3 of the course.

To apply for a degree course at Flinders University in 2009, you will need to have completed:

  • Parts 1, 2 and at least one topic in Part 3; and
  • attended at least 75% of the classes in these topics.

Before starting the course James Rock said, 'university seemed a place where I didn't belong and couldn't belong'. But he has now completed a degree in Laws and Legal Practice and is a practising lawyer.

Jadwiga Slomka said, 'I had no knowledge of English. I tried to teach myself the language using newspapers and the television'. After completing the Foundation Course, Jadwiga graduated with a Nursing degree, then obtained a postgraduate qualification in Psychiatric Nursing and is now working in the Flinders Medical Centre.
