FEELING OVERWHELMED OR STRESSED

If you’re feeling overwhelmed or stressed, Flinders can help.

Counselling services

Flinders provides a free and confidential professional counselling service for students experiencing personal issues that are impacting on their study and overall wellbeing.

The counsellors are senior clinicians from a diverse clinical background, who work with students regarding issues such as:

  • anxiety or depression
  • drug or alcohol issues
  • family or relationship difficulties
  • grief and loss
  • sexuality
  • transition and academic issues
  • trauma

If you’re accessing the service for the first time, email counselling@flinders.edu.au with your name, phone number, Student ID and best time to contact you. A counsellor will then conduct an initial assessment, discuss possible steps to assist you, and can book a face-to-face counselling appointment.

If you have already accessed counselling and wish to rebook, please phone 8201 2118.

All counselling appointments are booked in advance and offered at the Bedford Park Campus. Limited services are available at the Sturt and Tonsley Campuses.

Financial Pressure

If you experience financial difficulties, the Flinders University Student Association (FUSA) have a Financial Counsellor who can help you organise your finances, prepare a budget, and discuss options regarding debts.

We can also help you with emergency financial assistance and determine your eligibility to access an interest-free loan or a second semester grant.

Progression Support Program

If there's anything at all you're feeling like you need assistance with, or that's getting in the way of you being able to conduct your research, the Office of Graduate Research runs a program called Progression Support. Specially trained staff from Health and Counselling are there to help you through any of the issues listed above, and more.

Our main concern is support to you through your candidature, whatever is happening.

Visit the Progression Support website for more information.

ACADEMIC SERVICES

If you need help with your studies, Flinders has a number of services available.

Student Learning Centre

The Student Learning Centre offers study and academic support.

You can use the Learning Lounge drop-in service for support with your study skills or assignments, or access a great range of resources online – simply visit Student Learning Centre.

Access to drop-in service in the Learning Lounge. If using the drop-in service students are limited to a 20 minute session per visit due to high demand for our services in the Learning Lounge. The support provided in the Learning Lounge is essentially for assistance with academic writing, referencing, basic statistics and mathematics and use of Endnote. We cannot provide any assistance in the area of research methods, data collection and analysis etc – this is the responsibility of RHD student’s supervisor. Additionally we do not review whole chapters (again this is the supervisor’s responsibility) or provide an editing and proof-reading service (students need to organise this themselves).

RHD students from non-English speaking backgrounds can also access our English Language Support Program.

Writing

The Office of Graduate Research offers writing support for RHD students through:

WriteSkills, which is an intensive language support program for international students and those with a non-English speaking background, and

The Write Bunch, 30-minute intensive writing sessions via Skype aimed at connecting distance RHD students.

EQUAL OPPORTUNITY

Flinders University is committed to providing an inclusive and welcoming environment free from harassment, discrimination and bullying. We’ve detailed that commitment in our

Equal Opportunity Policy, which is supported by State and Federal legislation, and No Bullying at Flinders Statement.

In line with the Equal Opportunity Policy, the Student Equal Opportunity Adviser, based in Flinders’ Health, Counselling and Disability Services, supports and helps students to resolve complaints, including:

  • bullying
  • discrimination
  • harassment
  • sexual harassment
  • victimisation

In confidence, the advisors will offer information and support, and explain options, which are also outlined in Flinders’ Grievance Procedures, so you can make an informed decision.

To speak with an advisor or make an appointment, phone 8201 2118 or email studenteo@flinders.edu.au
