STUDENT FINANCES (DOMESTIC)

Domestic research higher degree students are normally provided a Research Training Program (RTP) fee offset to undertake their degree. The RTP Fee Offset covers tuition fees for up to four years full-time equivalent study for a Doctorate, and up to two years full-time equivalent study for a Masters by Research.

Research Training Program (RTP) Tuition Fee Offset

The Research Training Program (RTP) Fee Offset is provided to the University to offset tuition fees of a RHD student that would otherwise have been paid by the student. The fee offset represents the estimated cost of providing research training to students. These costs include:

  • RHD supervisor costs such as salary and on-costs
  • RHD research projects costs such as lab equipment, field trips, access to external equipment and facilities
  • RHD industry placements and commercialisation skills training costs
  • travel, accommodation and conference costs related to a RHD
  • RHD course development.

Periods of support

Doctoral students

  • a minimum of three years and up to a maximum of four years at a full-time student load, at the discretion of the university. For part-time students, a minimum of six years and up to a maximum of eight years at the discretion of the university.

Masters by Research students

  • a minimum of one year and up to a maximum of two years at a full-time student load at the discretion of the university. For part-time students a minimum of two years and up to a maximum of four years at the discretion of the university.

All RHD students’ period of support will incorporate any periods of leave approved by the university. Any periods of intermission/suspension approved by the university do not contribute to the period of support.

Periods of entitlement will be affected if students:

  • Do not apply for variations to candidature in a timely manner.
  • Transfer their research higher degree studies from another institution to Flinders University, the period of enrolment at the first institution will be deducted from the maximum period of entitlement at Flinders University.
  • Transfer their research higher degree studies to another institution, the period of enrolment at Flinders University will be deducted from the maximum period of entitlement at the second institution.
  • Downgrade their candidature from a Doctorate by research to an appropriate Masters degree. In this case, the maximum period of entitlement will be two years or the period of enrolment prior to the downgrade of candidature, whichever is greater.
  • Cease to be an enrolled student without requesting a period of intermission/suspension.
  • Do not resume study at the conclusion of a period of intermission/suspension or do not make arrangements to extend that period of intermission/suspension.
  • Do not maintain satisfactory progress.

Research Training Program (RTP) Tuition Fee Offset will be terminated if students:

  • Cease to be an enrolled student without requesting a period of intermission/suspension.
  • Do not resume study at the conclusion of a period of intermission/suspension or do not make arrangements to extend that period of intermission/suspension.
  • Do not maintain satisfactory progress.

Continuity of Study after RTP Tuition Fee Offset period of support

RHD students who have exceeded their RTP Tuition Fee Offset entitlement will be charged the fee offset amount for the remaining period of their RHD. Tuition fees will be charged on a pro-rata basis determined by the period of enrolment.

Refer to Student Related Policies and Procedures, Policy on Continuity of Study for further details.

Student Services and Amenities Fee

Research higher degree students are required to pay Student Services and Amenities fees each semester they are enrolled.  See Fee schedule for details.

These fees can be paid upfront, however if you are eligible (Australian citizens and  permanent humanitarian visa holders) you can defer the  fee through the SA-HELP loan scheme.  Some New Zealand citizens who have been long-term residents of Australia since childhood and meet particular eligibility criteria (see the Study Assist website for details) may also be eligible to defer fees.

Students wishing to access the SA-HELP loan will need to complete a Request for SA-HELP Assistance form online prior to the census date.  Your College RHD Administrative Officer can help you with this during your enrolment appointment or you can complete the form online using the following steps:

  1. Log on to the Student System from your student dashboard
  2. Click on the ‘My Commonwealth Assistance’ tab
  3. Select the relevant course
  4. Click ‘add new’

A list of relevant forms will be displayed

  • Click ‘Complete form’ next to ‘Request SA-HELP assistance’ under the ‘Recommended form’ heading
  • Complete the details as requested

Refer to the payments methods page for further details if you wish to pay your Student Services and Amenities fee upfront.

For information about completing forms, visit Flinders’ Fee Information.

RHD MILESTONES

The RHD Milestones provide a learning strategy to ensure communication between student and supervisor is focused on completion rather than generic progress.

You’re required to consult these regularly to ensure you’re on track with your study. Learn more about the RHD Milestones from the RHD Policies and Procedures Clause 13.4.

The RHD Milestones are:

  • Confirmation of candidature
  • Mid-candidature review
  • Final thesis review
  • Interim review report for part-time RHD students (to be completed in between the Milestones above, and to be used for all candidates enrolled beyond the Final Thesis Review at 6-monthly intervals)

Part-time students are required to provide an Interim Review Report in between the formal RHD Milestones. Candidates enrolled beyond their Final Thesis Review will be required to submit an Interim Milestone Review at 6-monthly intervals.

Learn more about the RHD Milestones and timelines.

RULES FOR RHD THESES AND WORD LIMITS

It’s important that right from the start of your candidature you begin with the end in mind. Review the rules for RHD theses.

Using Your Computer provides support materials on thesis preparation including style, format, referencing and a thesis template.

Where a College recommends word limits for the length of a thesis, this information will be published on the College website and also provided to examiners.

RESEARCH HIGHER DEGREE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM (RHDPDP)

The Office of Graduate Research manages the RHD Professional Development Program that provides all research higher degree students with a range of lectures, workshops and seminars related to research training and development free of charge.

Each semester this program is emailed to all students and available on Flinders’ website. You’ll also be notified of any additional planned activities via your Flinders email.

The program consists of four broad streams:

  • academic development
  • computer applications
  • research skills
  • professional development skills

Enquiries regarding the program (course availability, times and locations) should be made to the Office of Graduate Research on (08) 8201 2982. Learn more.

VARIATIONS TO CANDIDATURE

Should you need to change your candidature, including study load, requests for leave (intermission) or change of research project title, you’ll need to submit a variation to candidature application through your College RHD Administrative Officer. The Variation to Candidature forms can be located on your College's RHD webpages.

Learn more about all the variations to candidature in the RHD Policies and Procedures, including transfer between candidatures and temporary or permanent change of supervisor.

If you need to withdraw from candidature, please ensure the RHD Administrative Officer is aware as soon as possible, and remember to seek approval from your supervisor/s first.

NB: If you apply for leave (intermission) from candidature, you must also apply for leave (intermission) from your scholarship. Application forms can be obtained from Current students>Scholarships>Forms, and must be returned with your supervisor’s approval via the ‘Request Support’ tab in the Ask Flinders website.
