Preparing Your Grant Application

 

The following has been compiled to assist in the preparation of research grant proposals and fellowships. 

All applications for external funding support for research must be submitted through the Faculty of Health Sciences Office AND the Research Services Office.

Scholarships applications should be forwarded to the Higher Degree Administration and Scholarships Office.

 Grant Submission Process

  1. Enlist support from the Research Services Office. Discuss your project and clarify internal and external deadlines.

  2. Consider ethics requirements and obtain approval if required.
  3. Ensure that all facilities (eg animal holding, computing, workshop facilities) that are essential for the work proposed in the grant are available. 
  4. Consult with the Research Administrator in the Faculty of Health Sciences regarding budget, co-investment planning, commercialisation and Intellectual Property as required.
  5. Consult with Flinders Partners and utilise Ask Software if your research project has commercial potential.
  6. Draft your application, ensuring you complete all of the questions according to instructions from the granting body. 
    • Administering Institution = Flinders University 
    • Location where the work is to be undertaken = Flinders University, if the work is to be undertaken in the FUSA laboratories of the FMC building or elsewhere on University campus, FMC for hospital scientists, RGH for work primarily undertaken at the Repatriation General Hospital, Northern Territory Clinical School or Centre for Remote Health, Alice Springs for work primarily in these locations. 
  7. Draft your budget ensuring you have included the correct salary and on-costs for staff. Also include the University Infrastructure costs (25%) in all grant applications, except those for Australian Competitive Grants (Category 1). This levy will be applied unless you have a written exemption as explained on the Research Grant Certification form.
  8. Attach all supporting documentation requested by the granting body. Do not staple applications.
  9. Complete the Flinders University Certification Form (available at step 7). Instructions and Appendix 1 will assist you to complete this form. (Accounts cannot be set up without this form.)
  10. Obtain the authorisation and signature of the Dean (SoNM) or Cluster Leader or nominated representative (SoM). 
  11. Forward your original application and the required number of copies, along with all supporting documentation, to the Research Administrator in the Faculty of Health Sciences at least 24 hours prior to the Research Services Office internal deadline. The research administrator will forward these to the Research Service Office who will arrange for the University Registrar or nominated person to sign the application.
