School Boards

Preamble
The Boards of the Schools of Medicine and Nursing and Midwifery exercise a general superintendence over the affairs of the Schools, particularly with respect to course management and delivery. The School Boards are sub-committees of the Faculty Board.

Membership
Dean of School
Associate Dean
All members of the academic staff of the School holding full-time or fractional appointments
All persons holding full academic status in the School
Up to eight members of the general staff of the School, elected by and from the general staff of the School
Not less than seven student members, elected in accordance with rules approved by the Faculty Board on the recommendation of the Board of the School
Such other members as may be appointed by the Faculty Board on the recommendation of the Board of the School, eg representing affiliated institutions, professional bodies, industry etc

With the exception of the student members, elected members of the Board will serve for two year terms. The term of office of student members will be 12 months only.

Unless otherwise determined by the Board on the recommendation of the Dean, the Dean of School shall Chair meetings of the Board and the Associate Dean will be Deputy Chair, and preside over meetings in the absence of the Dean.

Terms of Reference

  • to act as an advisory body to the Dean in the management of the School;
  • to advise the Faculty Board on matters of general policy and procedure as they affect the School in areas such as strategic planning, financial management, legislative compliance etc;
  • to contribute to the development of academic policies of the University and Faculty by providing advice to the Faculty Board through the Faculty Teaching and Learning Committee;
  • to recommend to the Executive Dean on the process for the appointment of the Dean of School;
  • to provide a forum for the dissemination of information on matters of interest to the School;
  • to be responsible for the conduct of the academic programs and courses of study offered by the School;
  • to consider proposals for new and revised courses and programs of study with respect to their strategic fit and viability prior to the submission of the proposals to the Faculty Teaching and Learning Committee;
  • to consider proposals for new topics and variations to existing topics, and within policies agreed by the University and/or Faculty, exercise delegated authority to approve such proposals;
  • to receive Course Review reports and to advise Faculty Board on action taken with respect to the recommendations contained in those reports;
  • to exercise any other powers and functions delegated to it by the Faculty Board.

Reporting Relationship
The School Boards are committees of the Faculty and sub-committees of the Faculty Board. A number of School-based committees, including curriculum and course related committees, will report to the School Boards.

Meetings
The School Board will generally meet each month during the academic year.
