All commencing international students are expected to participate in orientation activities, in order to familiarise themselves with the different academic system and its expectations, as well as to learn more about their new environment and culture. Students who know how to access services and find their way around are on the way to success!
Your first step is to come to the International Student Services Unit (ISSU) office to attend an orientation and enrolment briefing session. For those of you who choose to be met at the airport, your invitation to the session will be in your arrival pack. If you are already in Adelaide, or make your own arrival plans, you need to contact the ISSU to find out details about the next available session.
The session will focus on enrolment, further orientation activities and important government regulations relating to your stay in Australia.
The University’s Student Learning Centre runs an academic orientation program called Excelerate. Even if you have studied at other universities before, you will find there are a number of important differences regarding assessment requirements, online learning tools and academic culture, which are important to find out about before the semester starts.
The Start Smart program covers a range of events designed to help you make the transition to being an effective and confident new student and to know where services are located and what they can offer to you. Another key to the program is your introduction to the Library services, because knowing how to use the Library is essential for your success.
The ISSU runs an information-packed day targeted at the specific needs of international students (eg Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC), transport options, personal safety, cultural adaptation and working in Adelaide). This session is run on the Saturday before semester commences. It is not all hard work, we have prizes, an Aussie barbecue and a fun quiz.
The ISSU organises a range of tours and trips for commencing students to help them become familiar with their local surroundings. These tours include guided tours to the city and the beachside suburb of Glenelg as well as a day trip to the Adelaide Hills and an Australian wildlife park.
