Wireless network

Wireless networking uses radio frequency signals to connect your laptop (or PDA, tablet etc) to the Campus Computer Network. When you use radio signals instead of wires to connect to the network you can move around and even access the network while outdoors in particular locations.

To use the wireless network your laptop (or PDA, tablet etc) must be equipped with a wireless network adapter. The Flinders University Wireless Network predominately uses the 802.11b/g wireless standards.

The Flinders University Wireless Network supports the access methods listed below:

  • Guest access to local public resources. This will allow visitors on-campus to access the University's public websites including the library catalogue.
  • Authenticated Internet access. This will allow staff, students and registered visitors on-campus and Internet access once they authenticate themselves to the wireless network. Individuals can use this service to connect to a local or remote Virtual Private Network (VPN) to provide data confidentiality. This service is useable by any wireless device with a WWW browser and provides a mechanism to support legacy wireless devices without modern authentication and encryption software.
  • Authenticated and encrypted Internet access. eduroam is used to allow staff, students and eduroam participants to use 802.1x and 802.11i authentication and encryption methods to insure data confidentiality.

Wireless users are advised to install Anti Virus Software and the latest operating system patches to their computer to insure it is not vulnerable to viruses or network attacks.

Usage guidelines

The wireless network is not a replacement for the wired network. Since it is a moderate performance network (11Mb/s to 54Mb/s) and a shared resource, some netiquette applies:

  • Do not download large files over the wireless network.
  • Do not stream video or audio (larger than 50 Kbps) over the wireless network.

The Wireless Network is a part of the Flinders University information technology environment. By your use of this resource, you have implicitly agreed to abide by the Acceptable Use of ICT Resources policy and are required to comply with all University policies and State and Federal laws concerning appropriate use of information technology. Non-compliance is considered a serious breach of community standards and may result in disciplinary or legal action.
