Installing and using the Cisco AnyConnect VPN client on Windows

Note: Green highlights in images indicate settings that must be changed or clicked on and Red highlights indicate the action that must be taken to continue to the next step.

Screenshots were taken in Internet Explorer 8 running on Windows 7. Some windows and dialog boxes may appear different in other web browser/operating system combinations.

Logging into the main VPN page

  1. Open a web browser (preferably Internet Explorer) and go to To access this link, you must connect from outside the Flinders network.
  2. Set the Group to Flinders, enter your FAN and password into the Login page and click Login:


Click the 'Continue' button on the Welcome screen.



The rest of the installation process will be slightly different depending on whether you are using Internet Explorer or have Java installed on the system, or manually install the AnyConnect Client .

Installing using Internet Explorer

  1. Internet Explorer should automatically attempt to install the VPN client and will prompt you through the information bar at the top of the screen (shown below). Select ‘Install This Add-on for All Users on This Computer...' to continue:
  2. Click Allow on the Internet Explorer Security window that pops up:
  3. The AnyConnect installer will download and install automatically:
  4. The Cisco AnyConnect client should automatically open and connect once installed:

Installing using Java

  1. If you are not using Internet Explorer or the automated installation is unable to complete using ActiveX, the installer will try and use Java instead to install AnyConnect. If you have Java installed on your computer, you will see the message shown below. Click Run to continue the installation:
  2. The AnyConnect installer will download and install automatically:
  3. The Cisco AnyConnect client should automatically open and connect once installed:

Manually installing the AnyConnect Client

If the computer is unable to use ActiveX or Java to install the client, it will offer the option of installing the VPN client manually:


  1. Click on the ‘Windows 7/Vista/64/XP' link (shown above) to begin downloading the installer and then click Run on the File Download - Security Warning that pops up:
  2. Click Run on the Internet Explorer - Security Warning popup:
  3. Click Next on the AnyConnect installer welcome screen:
  4. Accept the terms in the License Agreement and then click Next:
  5. Click the Install button (you may be prompted for the username and password of an administrator of your computer):
  6. When the installer has finished, click the Finish button:
  7. Double click the ‘Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client' icon in the system tray (shown below):
    • Note: If the icon is not immediately visible, you may need to click the arrow next to the Date/Time
  8. Type into the box and click Connect:
  9. Select the Flinders group from the drop down menu, enter your FAN and Password and click OK:
  10. The VPN client will show that it has connected successfully:
