eduroam is an agreement between educational and research institutions to share wireless access to enable inter-institutional roaming.

eduroam enables:

  • Flinders University staff and students to connect to the wireless networks of other participating institutions using their FAN (Flinders Authentication Name) name and password.
  • Visitors from other participating institutions to access the Flinders University wireless network.

Local policies at the visited institutions may affect what resources are available.

eduroam is available at Flinders University along with other Australian and Overseas organisations.

The conditions of use for eduroam and the Flinders University network are set out in the documents below:

Visitors to Flinders University

Visitors to Flinders University using the eduroam service have access to http, https and VPN services.

Although Flinders University will provide what support it can, it is the responsibility of the home organisation to provide support to you when accessing eduroam at another participating organisation.

If you are experiencing difficulty connecting to the eduroam service at Flinders University you should:

  • Contact your home organisation and ensure you have the correct configuration
  • Contact the Flinders Customer Service Centre to verify there are no issues with the Flinders wireless network
  • If you are still unable to connect then your home organisation support staff should raise a request for assistance with the National Service Provider (AARNet).

Flinders staff and students visiting another institution

All University staff and students are eligible to use eduroam wireless networks at any participating institution.

Before visiting an organisation you should examine the eduroam pages on their web site. Although eduroam is based on a common set of standards, different institutional policies may affect the type of Internet access granted and the type of authentication required at other sites.  Some external organisations will require the use of a VPN client. A self installing pre-configured VPN client for use with eduroam is available on the Flinders web site.

It is Flinders’ responsibility to provide support to you when accessing eduroam at another participating organisation. If you are experiencing difficulty connecting to the eduroam service when visiting another institution you should:

  • Ensure that your are using fan@flinders.edu.au and not just your fan as the login name for eduroam.
  • Contact your local support staff to verify that the configuration on your laptop is correct and that the eduroam service is running at Flinders
  • Contact the other institution's local IT support staff to ensure there are no issues with their wireless network
  • If you are still unable to connect then place a Service Request with the Flinders Customer Service Centre who will arrange for an Information Technology Support person to contact you. If necessary the Customer Service Centre will place a call with the National Service Provider (AARNet) for assistance.
  • You may experience issues connecting to eduroam at institutions using EAP-TTLS authentication. We are currently working on a new configuration solution that will address these.

eduroam at SA Health locations

The Flinders ITS team has been working with SA Health to provide access to eduroam wireless at SA Health hospitals similar to the eduroam service as if you were visiting another participating institution. eduroam is currently available at the Flinders Medical Centre and will be available in all SA Health hospitals from the 28th of September 2015.

eduroam at SA Health locations is similar to other participating institutions and you should be able to connect as you currently do. If you are a Flinders staff or student and you’re connecting to eduroam for the first time, instructions for setting up eduroam access are available on the page above.

If you are a visitor from a participating institution you will need to refer to your own IT Support team for instructions on connecting.

If you have used eduroam previously and are initially unable to connect at an SA Health location, you may need to forget the eduroam network on your device and connect to it again.

Flinders staff and students will need to ensure that you are using fan@flinders.edu.au and not just your FAN as the login name for eduroam.

Visitors from participating institutions will need to use the equivalent credentials for their home institution and may need to contact their local IT Support team for assistance.

If you require any further assistance with eduroam, please contact either the ITS Service Desk (for Flinders staff and students) or your local IT Support team (for visiting staff and students from participating institutions).
