The archive contains the following material:

Folders 1-2:Manuscripts acquired by J.M. Main dated 1767-90, including correspondence between 1st Marquess Townshend, John Lees, Lord Robert Bertie, John Willaston and Samuel Pipe; correspondence between G.F. James and Philip Styles, 1934 and 1936.

Folders 3-69: Papers relating to post-graduate studies at Oxford and to the earlier period of J.M. Main's tenure of a Lectureship at the University of Melbourne. 1949-59.

Folders 70-182: Papers associated chiefly with the period 1955-1966 at the University of Melbourne, but including some later material.

Folders 183-458: Papers as Senior Lecturer (1966) and Reader (1967) in History at Flinders University. 1966-84.

Folders 459-486: Papers relating to C.H. Main (father of J.M. Main) and other members of the Main family, together with a copy of a statement of the estate of J.M. Main, copies of obituaries, etc. 1930-1984.
