The major collections in the Medical Library are:
Books are shelved by location numbers on the western side of the Gus Fraenkel Medical Library. Many books are available for 4 week loan. Shorter loan periods of 7 days are indicated by a sticker on the spine of the book. Pamphlets, Folio Pamphlets and Folios (indicated by a p, fp or f in front of the location number) are interfiled within the Book Collection.
The journals are arranged by location number. The latest issue of each journal we subscribe to in print format is put on display on the shelves below the newspapers on the western side of the Library. This display is arranged alphabetically by journal title. Recent issues of most journals are now available in electronic format.
This Collection is located behind the Circulation Counter adjacent to Readings. It contains tests for use by Speech Pathology students. The loan period is usually 3 days. These tests may be booked - please ask at the Circulation Counter.
The Reference Collection is located close to the front of the book collection, on the verso of Shelf 1 and includes a range of dictionaries and directories. Reference materials are not available for loan but many items are available electronically.
A small collection of pre-1940 medical books is located at the front of the Reference Collection at Shelf 1. Items are available for loan. Medical Historical Collection
New books added to the collection are displayed for one week in the new book display area opposite the Circulation Counter. If there is a book you are interested in you can place a hold on the item while it is on display.
High demand materials, such as items from required reading lists are placed in the Readings Collection located behind the Circulation Desk. Locate the location numbers in the Library catalogue and request the item at the Circulation Counter to borrow from Readings. Reading materials are available for two hour loan only and are restricted for use within the Library. They may be available for overnight loan within two hours of the library closing time. The majority of high demand materials are now available online as eReadings.
The theses of Flinders postgraduates and some Honours students are kept in the Special Collections in the Central Library. Second copies of many theses from the School of Medicine are available for loan and can be found on the open shelves in the Book Collection. Others may have restricted access. If you would like to consult a particular thesis, and it is not in the Book collection, please ask at the Information Desk for further information.
