The Muir Collection contains materials relating to the book trade - minutes of meetings, reports of annual conferences of the Australian Booksellers Association, the South Australian Booksellers Association, other state associations, and the Publishers Association of Australia; there are also miscellaneous items relating to publishers and publishing in Australia and Great Britain. It was presented to the Library by Mr. Harry B. Muir of Beck Book Co. in 1983.
It contains letters including those from prominent South Australians Sir Trent de Crespigny and W.J. Sowden. There is a small number of art catalogues, a collection of bulletin "Red pages", mainly 1941-46; miscellaneous periodicals (some 1st issues) a few South Australian newspapers of historic interest. There are newsletters and bulletins covering brief periods of the National Trust of S.A., Art Gallery of S.A., Friends of the State Library of S.A., Pioneers Association of S.A., and the Natural History Society of S.A. There are newspaper cuttings of miscellaneous items of interest including censorship, Australiana, bookselling and booksellers, and literary figures.
Collection date ranges are 1877 to 1972. The quantity is approximately 1.5 metres of files and folders. Additional items were donated in 2016 – for further information about these items, please contact Special Collections.
