IBM SPSS - University On-Site Use

Our site license is specifically for the use of IBM SPSS in
• Noncommercial and University related research
• On-site campus teaching
• Administration purposes
Under the terms of our license the software may only be installed on University owned/controlled servers and computers. The software may be installed under any computer operating system currently supported by IBM SPSS. It can be installed directly on client desktop computers, University owned laptops, or on network servers for use by many users simultaneously.
Please note:

  1. If any technical assistance with IBM SPSS installation or licensing on University owned/controlled computers is needed, please contact IT support
  2. Flinders Medical Centre employees who are not students or staff members of Flinders University cannot obtain access to IBM SPSS through the University agreement.
  3. The Flinders University site license covers an extensive range of IBM SPSS modules and this website presents those that are included in our agreement with IBM. However, it is not financially viable to include in the site license those modules for which there is a limited demand. If more specialised SPSS modules or other statistical programs are required by students or staff, they will need to be purchased independently by researchers. The University Statistical Consultant can be contacted on phone ext. 13346 if access to specific statistical techniques are needed, as he/she may be able to provide suggestions for using alternative software.

IBM SPSS At-Home Use for Staff and Students

Undergraduate Students

Undergraduate students may use the IBM SPSS software installed in University libraries, labs and computer rooms while on campus. If you wish to use IBM SPSS on your home computer then you will need to purchase a copy for your own use. There are various versions of the software that are available to students (Student, Graduate Packs), each with different imposed limitations to functionality and length of the license.
• IBM SPSS Student Version
The IBM SPSS Statistics Student Version has a 13 month license code. It allows up to 50 variables and 1,500 cases. This software is unable to read IBM SPSS Statistics command syntax, and scripting and automation capabilities are unavailable. Add-on modules cannot be used with this package.
• IBM SPSS Graduate Pack
Gradpacks are single-user licenses that provide students with affordable access to statistical analysis, modelling and survey research tools to support their undergraduate or graduate course work. Complete information about the various types of GPs can be found at this link, which also lists official IBM SPSS distributors of statistical software rentals for academic customers. Additionally software can be obtained from Hearne (10% FU discount code can be obtained - if interested please call 82013346), UniBooks, the Co-op Online Bookshop and many other distributors of educational software.

Undergraduate students, who as part of their study may require access to the IBM SPSS software, and who by reason of a disability or other mobility restriction cannot easily utilise on campus computers, can also be provided with the software for at home use. In order to obtain access to the software in such situations, the 'topic coordinator' (on behalf of the student) needs to approach the Flinders University IBM SPSS technical point of contact (pawel.skuza@flinders.edu.au) to organise the practicalities of software provision.

Postgraduate Students

In addition to the possibility of using IBM SPSS installed in University libraries, labs and computer rooms while on campus (including 24/7 access in the HUB), each year the university has been purchasing a limited number of copies of IBM SPSS for distribution to postgraduate students free of charge. PhD, Doctorate, Masters by Research, Masters by Coursework (undertaking research projects) and Honours students are all eligible to apply for software.

Please note:

  1. It is important for postgraduate students and their supervisors (when endorsing their students' applications) to ensure that this additional "at home" access to the software, is requested at times of anticipated peak usage, to gain the most benefit from their access to this statistical package. Students that are, for example, early in their research candidatures and seeking to just briefly explore the software, should do so using computers at the university (library, computer labs, postgraduate rooms, etc.).
  2. Another change that needs to be mentioned, relates to the AMOS program now being available only as a separate Graduate Pack. Consequently, a separate application form has been prepared and supervisors are asked to confirm that students will indeed need to use Structural Equation Modelling while working on their research projects.

In order to obtain an access to the software you will need to:
(A) Save and complete the  IBM SPSS Statistics Postgraduate at Home User Agreement (DOC 50KB)  (if use of the Structural Equation Modelling family of statistical techniques is anticipated also the IBM SPSS AMOS Postgraduate at Home User Agreement (DOC 50KB)  ). Please inform the Software Licencing Team if you are using latest MacOS Sierra (10.12).
(B) Scan your valid student card,
(C) Preferably scan and email a signed application form as well as confirmation of your enrolment to Software Licencing team from the ITS Administration (software.licensing@flinders.edu.au). Alternatively you can internally post both documents to Information Technology Services, Software Licencing – Administration, Physical Sciences Building, Room 014.

Upon receiving of the signed form/s you will be provided with the web links to the online download site or alternatively, if size of the download (up to 1GB) may be an issue, an overnight loan of DVDs/Memory Sticks to install the software. You will also be provided with an individualised authorisation code which will be VALID UNTIL 31ST OF JANUARY FOLLOWING YEAR. In order to extend the access to the software a new application would have to be submitted. Version 23 of IBM SPSS, which is also used on all university owned computers, can be provided to the students. Please inform the Software Licencing Team if you are using latest MacOS Sierra.
If there are insufficient licenses available through the University subsidised scheme, you then may have the same options as for undergraduate students.

Please note:

  1. The distribution of IBM SPSS for private use, works in the same way as buying software independently from a retail store. Successful applicants need to take care of their own computers and install and license the software themselves following the instructions provided.
  2. Software can be used only for a non-commercial academic research. Non-commercial academic research means research by degree seeking students and faculty members where (i) the results of such research are not intended primarily for the benefit of a third party; (ii) such results are made available to anyone without restriction on use, copying or further distribution; and (iii) any copy of any such result is furnished for no more than the cost of hosting, reproduction, and shipping.
  3. It is advisable for the applicant to check the system requirements before applying for software. IBM SPSS supported platforms can be checked here.
  4. University statistical consultant runs various statistical workshops which utilise the IBM SPSS. Full workshops list and option for enrolling can be found in here. Furthermore, "SPSS Solutions for Education" website provides various resources for Academic users.

Further enquiries regarding IBM SPSS ”At home” access for postgraduate students at Flinders University should be directed to Software Licencing team from ITS Administration (software.licensing@flinders.edu.au, phone extension 13818).

Staff Members

Full-time members of staff or part-time employees who have a substantial appointment (please note, this does not include casual tutors) are allowed to have a copy of IBM SPSS and/or IBM AMOS installed on their home computers.

In order to obtain an access to the software you will need to:
(A) Save and complete a  IBM SPSS Statistics Staff at Home User Agreement (DOC 46KB) (if use of the Structural Equation Modelling family of statistical techniques is anticipated, also a  IBM SPSS AMOS Staff at Home User Agreement (DOC 46KB)  ), which specifies the conditions of your use and,
(B) Preferably scan and email it to the Software Licencing team from the ITS Administration (software.licensing@flinders.edu.au). Alternatively you can internally post the document to Information Technology Services, Software Licencing – Administration, Physical Sciences Building, Room 014.

While we encourage staff members to roll over to the version ver 23 of SPSS, which is implemented on university owned computers, the codes for older versions (ver 20,21 and 22) can be provided.

Academic Status Holders

Introduced in 2014 changes to the site license agreement allow us to distribute 40 authorisation codes for private computers of Academic Status Holders (ASH). Codes will be allocated proportionally to the each faculty number of ASHs and only upon endorsement from Schools’ Deans of Research.
If there are insufficient licenses available through the University subsidised scheme, ASH then may have the same options as in the previous years’ as they will still be entitled to access IBM SPSS and/or IBM AMOS on an University owned or leased computers.

In order to obtain an access to the software you will need to:
(A) Save and complete a  IBM SPSS Statistics Academic Status Holder at Home User Agreement (DOC 49KB) (if use of the Structural Equation Modelling family of statistical techniques is anticipated, also a  IBM SPSS AMOS Academic Status Holder at Home User Agreement (DOC 49KB)  ) which specifies the conditions of your use and,
