Overview of admissions to Medicine at Flinders

There are two broad pathways for admission to the Flinders Medical Course: graduate-entry and entry from high school.  Since 2011 the full medical program has been conducted in the Northern Territory as well as in South Australia. Indigenous graduate-entry applicants may apply via the standard admissions process or via the Indigenous Entry Stream.

The two admission pathways are outlined below, with links to more detailed descriptions.

Graduate-Entry

This is the major route for entry to the 4-year Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery.

There are up to 87 places for domestic applicants and up to 25 places for international students in Adelaide, South Australia. In addition there are 24 graduate-entry domestic places in the Northern Territory Medical Program. The admissions process for both domestic students (Australian citizens and permanent residents and New Zealand citizens) and international students is designed to attract applicants with diverse backgrounds and experience.

There are three elements in the admissions process.

  1. All candidates must have completed a Bachelors degree from an Australian university or tertiary institution deemed to be of equivalent standard, or be due to complete such a degree before starting the course.
  2. Applications (other than those via the Indigenous Entry Stream) require results from an admissions test.  For domestic applicants, this must be the Graduate Medical Schools Admissions Test (GAMSAT); international students may sit GAMSAT or the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT).
  3. The final element in the admissions process is a structured interview.

Domestic candidates are short-listed for interview mainly on the basis of overall GAMSAT score.  Short-listing of international applicants is based on a combination of undergraduate GPA and admission test scores. After interview, applicants are ranked on an equal combination of scores from GPA, admissions test and interview.

More details of the graduate-entry processes are given in separate outlines for domestic applicants and international applicants.

Entry from High School (Year 12)

Year 12 domestic students may apply for 25 places in a double degree in Adelaide which enables completion of the degrees of Bachelor of Clinical Sciences and Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery in six years. Students selected for the double degree undertake two years of study in Clinical Sciences with either a Medical Science or Health Sciences focus, then (given satisfactory progress) have automatic entry to the 4-year BMBS.   In addition there are 12 places for a related double degree in the Northern Territory.

There are two elements in the admissions process.

  1. An Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR) or its equivalent, will be the major basis for selection.
  2. Results from the University Medicine and Health Sciences Admission Test (UMAT) which will make a small contribution to selection.

For further details of the double degree and Year 12 admissions process see the Flinders (Adelaide) Bachelor of Clinical Sciences/BMBS website or the NT Medical Program website.

The double degree is not open to international students.
