The Southgate Journal Club assists researchers to conduct and publish good quality research relevant to the social determinants of health.

The Journal Club provides a forum for researchers to come together and participate in active discussion, to analyse recent literature in a critical way, examine methodological approaches, and consider lessons and insights for writing our own papers.

6th Southgate Oration

The 6th Soutgate Oration was held on Thursday, 6th November 2014. Professor Sharon Friel, Director and Professor of Health Equity at the Regulatory Institutions Network (RegNet), and Director of the Menzies Centre for Health Policy, Australian National University, presented: 'Working at the edges: An academic’s reflection on how to work in matters of public policy and global health equity.'

 Early Career Researchers group

The Southgate Early Career Researchers group is open to anyone at Flinders who is researching in the areas of health, health equity and disadvantage, social determinants of health, and social science.

Researchers are encouraged to join the group if they consider themselves an Early Career Researcher, including:

  • Postdocs who have completed in the not-too-distant past
  • PhD students
  • People working as research assistants or research officers (with or without a postgraduate qualification).

Both younger and more mature-age people are welcome.

The most recent meeting titled "Reviewing Manuscripts: Tips From Editors That Will Help new reviewers & Grant Writing Tips" was held on Tuesday, 28 October 2014.
