‘Indigenous teaching’ embraces both the teaching of Indigenous students, and the teaching of Indigenous curriculum. Many lecturers do both. In our universities this is a rapidly expanding field, full of promise, and vital for the future of our Indigenous communities and of Australia as a whole. Yet, for a number of reasons, Indigenous teaching is not always an easy task. As university teachers we have few opportunities to come together to engage with the issues and to share good practice. Nor have we yet established a strong evidence base for ‘what works’.

In a recent Teaching Fellowship funded by the Australian Learning & Teaching Council (ALTC), 26 academic staff engaged in Indigenous teaching were interviewed across New South Wales and Victoria. All these teachers were recommended for their exemplary practice by senior Indigenous academic leaders in their institutions. Analysis of the interview data led Christine to identify 15 suggested approaches to Indigenous teaching (see www.Indigenousteaching.com )

As participants in this interactive seminar/workshop, you will:
•    discuss the research findings;
•    consider the relevance of the 15 approaches to your own teaching practice, and to the learning of your students;
•    share your own innovations and good practice in this important area of university teaching.
