The Southgate Institute for Health, Society and Equity:

A national centre for research into the social determinants of health and wellbeing

The Southgate Institute for Health, Society and Equity (the Southgate Institute) has been established through the successful Australian Research Council Federation Fellowship of Professor Fran Baum at Flinders University. The Federation Fellowship is also supported by the SA Department of Health, the SA Social Inclusion Unit and the Premier's Science and Research Fund.

In October 2012, Professor Fran Baum was also honoured as one of Flinders University's most eminent professors with the inaugural award of the title of "Matthew Flinders Distinguished Professor".

The Southgate Institute is named after the late Associate Professor Deane O. Southgate AM FRACGP, FACOM. A/Prof Southgate was Head of then Department of Primary Care and Community Medicine in the School of Medicine, Flinders University at the time of his death in 1991.

The Institute aims to build on the international, national and local reputation of Flinders University for conducting policy and practice relevant research on the social and economic determinants of health and health equity in particular.

Dr Lareen Newman wins Telstra-TJA Christopher Newell Prize 2nd place

A Flinders University research team including Dr Lareen Newman has won 2nd prize in the Telstra-Telecommunications Journal of Australia Christopher Newell Prize competition. The project is entitled "‘They think I'm really cool and nice': The impact of Internet support on the social networks and loneliness of young people with disabilities."

Southgate researchers have recently published an article in BMC Public Health, "The interplay between structure and agency in shaping the mental health consequences of job loss". Read the article.

Dr Lareen Newman to present at Canterbury Christ Church University symposium

Dr Lareen Newman will present via Skype at the one day symposium 'E-Communities in the Digital Age' on 12 June 2013 organised by Canterbury Christ Church University, Canterbury, UK.

Lareen's presentation is titled 'Basic reading and comprehension ability: an overlooked barrier to digital inclusion for disadvantaged groups?'.

Book Health Promotion and the Policy Process released September 2013

Prof Fran Baum and Dr Angela Lawless, with Carmel Williams (SA Health) have authored a chapter in Health Promotion and the Policy Process, to be released in September 2013.

This is the first book to take an in-depth look at the theoretical advances in the political sciences, including discussing the significance of political economy and sociology, which so far have made little progress in health promotion development.

2nd ed. Better Birth: The Definitive Guide To Childbirth Choices released

The Second Edition of Better Birth: The Definitive Guide To Childbirth Choices has been published. The book is written by Dr Lareen Newman, Southgate Institute, and Heather Hancock, University of Adelaide. See more information.

Dr Lareen Newman investigating social media for rural teens with disability

Dr Newman is on a research team that recently won a Federal Government National Disability Research and Development Grant. The team will survey young people with disabilities to determine the nature and extent of their current internet use. See more information about the research.

Aboriginal Knowledge in the Academy

The Southgate Institute has teamed up with the Poche Centre for Indigenous Health and Well-Being and the Dulwich Centre Foundation, to run a public seminar series on Aboriginal Knowledge in the Academy.

The series will examine the interface between western health services and practice and Indigenous culture and tradition. It will aim to provide systematic presentations of Indigenous knowledge, epistemologies and perspectives to inform fresh approaches to Indigenous health and social determinants issues.
